Rapid Custom Retail: Yun Eyewear Flagship, Berlin

Reported by Stefanie Dorfer on Jan 10, 2017 2:23:36 PM

Capitalising on the two-pronged allure of customisation plus transparency, Korean eyewear brand Yun’s new Berlin flagship features a state-of-the-art robotic machine that finishes lenses while customers watch. Forming part of a fully visible manufacturing lab located on the shop floor, the machine manufactures both spectacles and sunglasses made to fit precise prescriptions in just 20 minutes.

Carrying over 12,000 variations of blank lenses to accommodate the widest possible array of prescriptions, the store offers customers a straightforward purchasing journey. The customer selects a frame and then observes an automated finishing and shaping process, with lenses chosen according to the model and individuals’ visual acuity. A store associate makes final adjustments by hand.

As well as fast fulfilment, the brand uses a minimalistic pricing system with frames and tailored prescription lenses costing either €99 ($103) for opticals or €149 ($155) for sunglasses. Eye tests to discern exact specifications are free for those making a purchase and are carried out in-store by professional opticians in dedicated examination rooms – bookable in-store or via Yun’s e-commerce site.

Reducing the usual length of time needed for such a bespoke service could make Yun a major game-changer in the eyewear retail category, enabling it to capitalise on impulse shopping.
